Here & Now

Its such a long time since I wrote a Newsletter, I feel I am reinventing the wheel. Isn’t that an odd thought - something you can do backwards and forwards without thinking you find you have to relearn.

I was very chirpy and hopeful but I have another health hurdle to overcome. Please think of me and say Hi - it really helps!

Let’s take another look at my latest finished painting. The title describes my inspiration - the paintwork you will see on the side of a Narrow Boat.

To me, the decorative style speaks of an alternative life of the past.

These horse drawn, 7 foot-wide boats provided commercial transport along the network of canals dating back as far as 16th century.

For another titbit of history: The Exeter Ship Canal was completed in 1567 when rivers were ‘canalised’. The Sankey Canal was the first British canal of the Industrial Revolution, opening in 1757.

And now many canals are being re-instated and the boats are more likely to be used for leisure. Chugging along they give a slow, relaxed way of travel and the shore sedately slips by.

The Classical Realist way I trained is just perfect for this image.

A dark ground - often referred to as having a Tenebrist derivation - acts as a wonderful setting for the jewel-like colours of flowers and the simply painted ceramic dish.
