The second painting of members of the Gimpel family, the first is The Betrothal - Francesca Mosca and Lukas Gimpel the third "Yone, Eva & Ruben" is currently in progress.
Commissioned by the art dealer René Gimpel, it portrays his eldest daughter Dr Jenny Gimpel, her husband, Dr Hugo Spiers, and their son Max posing in their living room in Kings Cross, London.
The urban nature of their lives as young professional academics is reflected in the outside view, their stance, clothes and the interior of their city apartment.
There are traces of a photographic sense of space. Outside the colours are cool, inside a warmer palette is used. Outside is soft focus - sfumato - inside the figures are crisply defined. The pattern of the carpet is echoed in the receding street-view outside, enhancing the perspective.
Jenny stands, Hugo sits, gently holding Max's hand, depicting a modern family.

As a portrait and figure painter I use classical techniques. My aim is to create paintings and drawings that seem to depict something real. Some live person is actually there! An embodiment or evocation of a living presence.
Classical principles are determined by visual harmonies. The artist has to strive for a perfect balance of form, tone, darks, lights, crisp contrasts and sfumato. These transitions can guide and encourage the eye to believe in something that is clearly a chimera. The image is 3D even though the reality is 2D.
